Common Selection Structure

  • Prelims: Objective type exam (Law, Current Affairs, General Knowledge).
  • Mains: Written descriptive exam (Substantive/Appellate Law, Language, Judgement Writing).
  • Interview/Personality Test: Assessment of legal knowledge, communication, and judgement skills.
  • Skill Test: For posts like Stenographer, Translator, Personal Assistant.
  • Qualification: Most require LLB degree; specific posts may need experience or specialist certification.

Preliminary Examination

Prelims stage is generally an objective-type (Multiple Choice Questions) screening test. It focuses on:

  • Indian Constitution & Law (IPC, CPC, CrPC, Evidence Act, Local Acts)
  • General Knowledge & Current Affairs
  • Analytical & Reasoning Skills

Scoring above the cut-off in Prelims is essential to give Mains.

Mains Examination

Mains phase includes descriptive, written papers test:

  • Substantive & Procedural Law (incl. Contract, Tort, Transfer of Property, Family Law)
  • Language Proficiency (English, Hindi/Regional Language)
  • Writing Judgments/orders, Legal Essays
  • Translation (where applicable)

This round is designed to assess legal drafting, case analysis, and written communication abilities.

Interview/Viva Voce

Final stage is a face-to-face personality test, focusing on:

  • Legal aptitude & knowledge
  • Application of law to practical scenarios
  • Ethics & judicial temperament

Overall suitability for a judge or judicial/prosecution officer

Skill/Typing/Translation Tests

Dedicated posts such as Stenographer, Translator, or Personal Assistant require a separate skill or language proficiency test (typing, shorthand, translation accuracy).

Can final-year law students apply for judiciary exams?

Generally, LLB degree must be completed before the application deadline; check specific commission rules.

Is practice experience mandatory?

Practice experience is mostly required only for Higher Judicial Services and District Judge exams and not for entry-level Civil Judge/Judicial Service posts.

Are these exams held annually?

Frequency of exams vary by state and post, some annually, others as per vacancies.

Can practicing advocates appear for Civil Judge posts?

Yes, but should meet upper age and LLB criteria as specified.

Which exam is needed for practicing law nationwide?
